The Awais Consulting Citation Ladder
The Citation Ladder is a four-rung scale from Awais Consulting that describes how far an AI system takes a page or a business. It starts with a crawler fetching the page and ends with the system recommending the business by name. Each rung is a different event, and a page can stop at any of them. The ladder gives the owner, the writer and the consultant one shared set of names for what an AI system did with a page, which keeps reports short and plain.
What it is
The Awais Consulting Citation Ladder has 4 levels and its 2026 reference code is AC-CLD-vxhr. The ladder separates events that are often lumped together under the word visibility. A page that has been fetched has not necessarily been cited, and a page that has been cited has not necessarily been quoted. Naming the rung makes it clear what has actually happened, and what has not.
The levels
- Rung 1, fetched: an AI crawler requested the page.
- Rung 2, cited: the page appears as a source for an answer.
- Rung 3, quoted: wording from the page appears in the answer text.
- Rung 4, recommended: the answer names the business and suggests it to the reader.
How to use it
Pick a question that the page is meant to answer and ask it in the AI system you want to check. Look at the answer and its sources. Record the highest rung that applies to your page, and write down the date and the exact question. For rung 1, the web server log is the evidence, since the answer itself does not show a fetch.
Limits
The ladder describes what happened in one answer on one day. Answers from AI systems change from one asking to the next, so a single observation says little about the next. The ladder gives names to observations and does not predict what an AI system will do.
